These time-tested genetics are uniquely suited to small family homesteads and local markets. Historical Archive OnlyIn previous Pennsylvania farm seasons, surplus floating aquatic plants were cultivated for natural water filtration, nutrient cycling in duck ponds, and seasonal water garden aeration:
Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)
Historical price: $1/plant (PA archive). Rapidly absorbs excess pond nitrates and shades water from algae.
Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes)
Historical price: $1/plant (PA archive). Floating rosette providing shelter for aquatic biology.
Please note: Floating aquatic pond plants (including Water Hyacinth and Water Lettuce) are not legal for sale in South Carolina due to state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) aquatic invasive species regulations. This historical listing is preserved solely as a reference of past Pennsylvania farm activities.
Wild Edibles & Botanical Foraging
In addition to cultivated beds, our farm ecosystem yielded rich wild foods. We integrated these wild botanicals into our educational farm tours and homestead culinary preparations:
Hedgerow Restoration & Perennial Systems
We combined intensive rotational livestock grazing with perennial hedgerow buffers. Multi-use horse trails doubled as access routes for planting windbreaks and edible hedgerows featuring honeyberry/haskap, serviceberry, hazelnut, gooseberry, blackberry, raspberry, mulberry, and tree hay forage banks.
