Which breed should I choose?
Fainting or Myotonic goats are a multi-purpose American heritage breed that excel at efficient meat production but also yield moderate amounts of rich milk and some have short-fiber cashmere. Fainting goats are known for being docile, easier on fences and quiet. Fainting goats have a very distinctive breed type that is based mostly on head and body conformation. They also have a muscle condition called myotonia congenita. This inherited trait leads to an overall increase in muscle mass so that the goats are very muscular when compared to other breeds of similar size. This trait is so distinctive that it is easy to confuse the trait with the breed. However, the Myotonic goat is much more than just a myotonic condition; it has a host of other consistent traits that are very important and need to be conserved for future generations.
Several important characteristics are typical of the breed:
Docile temperament
Myotonia congenita leading to stiffness and muscularity
Abundance of high quality muscle
Good adaptation to low-input forage-based feeding systems
Genetic distance from other breeds such that crossbreeding yields great hybrid vigor.
Easy kidders, excellent mothers, and twinning typical
American Guernsey goats are a rare endangered breed of dairy goat from Guernsey in the Channel Islands in the United Kingdom, where it has been known for more than two hundred years. They are golden in color, and smaller and more fine-boned than many milking goats and are very docile and very friendly in comparison to other milking breeds. Guernseys are exclusively for dairy production, producing an average yield of 6.97 pounds of milk per day with high butterfat and protein content (3.72% and 2.81%, respectively).
Several important characteristics are typical of the breed:
Docile friendly temperament
Good adaptation to low-input forage-based feeding systems
Golden to reddish longer haircoat with gold skin tone
Moderate milk production of higher protein and butterfat milk

Our Adult Breeding Stock
You can research pedigree details on the Myotonic Goat Registry website by using the Pedigree Database Search Tool. Basic dam x sire information is included here. We chose limited breedings in 2024 while we are getting set up in South Carolina. We are fortunate to have an outcross to buck Wolfsheim this season.

Some general points about our herd and sales
Boys for sale as bucklings can be wethered (neutered) at buyer’s request. Bucklings will not be wethered without a deposit plus a non-refundable neutering fee of $50. The deposit and neutering fee are applied to your final total purchase cost.
You may visit the herd and kids by booking a Playtime With Goats Experience on AirBnB. Your tour admission is credited toward your purchase. Please carefully review our list of currently available goats. We are happy to provide additional photos or video, or arrange a live video call on Skype or WhatsApp to finalize your choice. We do not do private on-site kid visits until a deposit is paid, as we have a very full farm schedule (including paid tours of the goat operation).
The price of the goat includes registration certificates OR signed application with MGR.
Kids can be picked up at three months of age or later. We do this for their social development.
Our kids are dam-raised. We do not sell bottle babies. Kids may be shy at first.
We maintain a closed herd and currently have no known health problems. Nevertheless, we do not guarantee our goats are CAE/Johnes/CL free or free of any other diseases or health problems. We CAN guarantee that all parents were tested and negative in the calendar year of your purchase, and the testing certificate is posted publicly on our website and Facebook page. Some diseases can lurk and not show up on tests, and it is difficult to entirely remove transmission risk on any farm that has outside vehicles/visitors or wildlife coming and going.
Goats are herd animals and will be very unhappy if you just have one; they need the company of their own kind. Because we care about our goats, we will not sell just one goat to anyone unless they already have goats.
Males are neutered (wethered) using a burdizzo, which causes the testicles to atrophy. Sterility is within days. However full atrophy may take 3 months and the wether will retain a small scrotum for life.
Fainting behavior (myotonia) varies by diet, weather and other factors. Barakah Heritage Farm does not guarantee the frequency/intensity of fainting (myotonia). If fainting pictures are available for a specific goat, copies will be provided to the buyer. MGR will accept goats with the degree of myotonia varying from no obvious myotonia to mild stiffening to frequent full fainting, provided other characteristics are consistent with the breed standard.
Our most recent negative CAE CL Johnes test results from WADDL
Please note the 2020 and 2021 test results are no longer applicable, as we rebuilt the entire herd with outside stock at the end of 2021 after the 2021 barn fire. All goats listed in the 2020 and 2021 test results are deceased.
New stock brought in at the end of 2021 was tested or came from tested herds. New stock will be tested again in 2023 prior to sold goats leaving for new homes.
