Why We Chose Guernseys: Intentional Heritage Selection
When we decided to work with a second rare heritage breed alongside our purebred Myotonics, we deliberately chose American Guernseys for their unique homestead qualities:
Smaller and more medium-boned than large commercial dairy breeds like Saanens or Alpines, making them much easier to handle on a small homestead.
Known across dairy breeds for their exceptionally calm, affectionate disposition and gentle patience on the milking stanchion.
Thrive on pasture browse, tree hay, and diverse roughage rather than demanding high grain concentrate inputs to maintain condition.
200-Year Heritage: From the Channel Islands to America
The Golden Guernsey goat developed over more than two centuries on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel. Treasured for their golden-fawn coats, golden skin tones, and rich milk, they survived World War II through the courageous efforts of island breeders who hid foundation stock from occupation forces.
In the late 20th century, British and American breed conservationists established breed recovery programs. In the United States, the Guernsey Goat Breeders of America (GGBoA) and the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) maintain herdbook grades (HB1, HB2, and American Guernsey) allowing breeders to grade up and preserve these rare genetics.
Milk Profile: Golden Richness & High Butterfat
Guernsey milk is famous for its sweet, clean flavor, high yield of butterfat and protein, and golden coloration due to beta-carotene transfer:
The high solid content makes Guernsey milk particularly prized for cheesemaking, yogurt, and rich family homestead drinking milk without the "goaty" aftertaste sometimes found in other breeds.
Our Foundation: Black Locust Herdshare Lineage
Our foundation Guernsey does were carefully selected from Black Locust Livestock & Herbal in Ohio—one of the longest-running and most respected raw goat milk herdshares in the region.
The Black Locust herd was developed specifically for low-input thriftiness, natural parasite resistance, and high butterfat milk on pasture and tree browse. Our retained does:
The Intentional Cross: Myotonic × Guernsey Hybrid Vigor
Because Myotonic goats have considerable genetic distance from European dairy breeds, crossing a purebred Myotonic buck (like senior herd sire Blossom View Titan) with an American Guernsey doe produces extraordinary hybrid vigor (heterosis):
What the F1 Cross Delivers for Homesteads:
- ✓ Dairy Depth + Muscularity: Combines Guernsey milk yield with the heavy loin and meat yield of the Myotonic.
- ✓ Enhanced Parasite Resilience: The cross exhibits outstanding natural vigor on pasture browse without frequent chemical interventions.
- ✓ Grounded Temperament: Inherits the grounded, fence-respecting nature and sweet demeanor of both parent breeds.
Our retained doe Oak Hill Maxine (Goldilocks × Titan, MGR #G7225) and companion wether Dandy serve as living proof of what this intentional cross achieves.
Program Status: Cherished Foundation Stock
We originally planned to breed and offer purebred Guernseys alongside our Myotonics; however, following the loss of our breeding buck, our purebred Guernsey breeding program is currently on hold.
Our foundation does Rapunzel and Goldilocks remain cherished, permanent members of our farm family. While we are not producing purebred Guernsey kids at this time, their genetics continue to contribute to our understanding and appreciation of rare heritage dairy lines.
